The city has come a long way in terms of development, having gone from a stone age settlement to an important city with universities, major arts centers and a very rich history. In 2000 the city was named the European Capital of Culture and is visited by millions of tourists annually. There is lots to do here, and you surely won’t be disappointed if you come and visit.
