John Caudwell – 1.84B GBP
John Caudwell was an A-levels dropout when he started working for Michelin Tires. However, things changed when he went into the then-new world of mobile phones. It was 1986, so not many major telecom companies were present in the U.K. Together with his brother, he founded Midland Mobile Phones and started selling mobiles wholesale. They later entered retail with Phones 4u, their breakout company. The company later began to operate under the parent company called Caudwell Group and earned record-breaking digits. When they eventually sold the company, they were set for life.
Ayman Asfari – 756M GBP
Ayman Asfari has a life story that sounds like something out of a Dickens novel. Originally from Syria, he eventually moved to Oman and worked as a soil tester. He went to the United States for college and joined the oilfield company Petrofac. Back then, Petrofac only operated in Texas. After a couple of years, he bought ownership of the company and then placed it on the London Stock Exchange. After a decade, Petrofac was able to make waves as one of the biggest providers of oilfield services in the world. Whoa.
