Cargo Cult
The term cargo cult is more commonly encountered is less developed societies. It refers to the behavior of cult members to attribute superstitious beliefs on any object that drops down from the sky. Cargo and technology are some of the most common items seen falling to the ground. There are still several cargo cults that exist in Papua New Guinea. The Swamp Ghost was not only a tourist attraction but was also held as a spiritual object by some of the locals. Many of them who hold such beliefs were displease that the aircraft was removed from their area.

Papua New Guinea was a strategic location that became significant during World War II. More than US 600 aircraft units were recorded to have crashed in the country. If the number of enemy planes was included, the total would undoubtedly reach thousands. Despite this, the wreckage was usually overlooked by the local residents. Many of the crash sites were high inaccessible and difficult to navigate. The swamps, rainforests, savannas, and mountain chains present dangerous obstacles that also affects its population negatively.
