Karen was also dieting disproportionately to ready herself for the shows. In 1975, she was in no condition to continue with the tour and the Carpenters had to call off their shows in the United Kingdom, the Philippines, and Japan.

It was then that Karen finally reached out to a medical professional for her condition. She underwent therapy conducted by psychotherapist Steven Levenkron in New York City. Richard expressed disapproval at the methods employed by the doctor, but he did not have a say on the matter. Karen continued to attend sessions with Levenkron. One day, she paid the professional a phone call and explained that her heart was “beating funny”.
