Everyone knew that the Carpenter siblings were close to one another, but that does not mean that they get along all of the time. In fact, there were many points of contention regarding their work life. Reports say that Richard was something of a slave driver who refused to give Karen a lot of freedom. Apparently, it was often his call whether to cancel or proceed with a show. Who would not want independence if they were in her shoes?

In addition to her extreme dieting, Karen tended to walk for several miles in order to lose even more weight. Her doctor cautioned her against this habit and got in touch with the family to ask for their involvement in her recovery. Sadly, the phone call did not go in the direction that the doctor had in mind.
